About

Hi, I'm Sara.

Sara Mitchell

I'm the kind of dog mum who reads the research, not just the label. Three dogs, one quiet obsession: giving them the longest, healthiest, happiest lives I possibly can.

The Dog Mum Diaries started the way most of my worst nights did — at midnight, on my kitchen floor, googling "why is my dog licking her paws raw" while she chewed hers next to me. But somewhere between the vet visits and the 2am research spirals, the worry turned into something bigger: a full-blown obsession with my dogs' health, and with buying them as many good years as I possibly can.

Now I read ingredient panels the way other people read their own nutrition labels. I track what goes in, what changes, what actually moves the needle — energy, coat, digestion, mood, the lot. I've tried almost every "gut health" chew, powder and probiotic on the shelf; most did nothing, some made things worse. Slowly I stopped trusting the front of the packet and started trusting the back of it. That's really what this whole site is: me obsessing over the details so your dog gets the good years, not the guesswork.

My three (very different) reasons for caring

People assume "sensitive dog" means one thing. It doesn't. Between my three, I've lived through most versions of it:

Nala 🐾
French Bulldog · 4 yrs

My reason for starting all this. Yeasty ears, itchy paws, red skin folds and a flare-up every time the seasons changed. If you've got a Frenchie, you already know.

Baxter
Labrador · 7 yrs

The stomach of the family. Eats anything he shouldn't, then pays for it — and so does the carpet. Loose stools and a rumbling gut were our normal for years.

Pip
Cockapoo · 2 yrs

The itchy one. Paw-nibbling, tear stains and that restless 2am scratching that wakes the whole house. Proof that "small and fluffy" doesn't mean "easy."

What this site actually is

Honest, plain-English breakdowns of the products marketed to dog mums like us — judged against one question: does this actually help my dog live a healthier, longer life? I care about what's in a formula and what the science says, not how pretty the branding is — and I'll happily tell you when something popular isn't worth your money.

My bias, stated plainly: after all of it, I'm convinced that long-term health starts in the gut, so I write from a gut-first, longevity-minded point of view. You don't have to agree — but you'll always know exactly where I stand.

A note on honesty: The Dog Mum Diaries is an editorial project, and it isn't fully independent — some of the products I recommend, including BetterBlend, are ones I'm affiliated with and may earn from. I only ever point you toward things I'd give my own dogs, but you deserve to know that upfront. Nothing here is veterinary advice; always speak to your vet about your dog's health.
